Description: The program area boundaries for the NFWF Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship ProgramThe program aims to:Improve the management of public and private forestlands in order to create blocks with a mosaic of mixed-aged forests that support a diversity of bird and wildlife species, especially targeting golden-winged warbler, wood thrush and cerulean warbler. Improve stream health by removing passage barriers, restoring riparian buffers, and improving water quality and hydrology to bolster populations of eastern brook trout, eastern hellbender and native freshwater mussels.From 2017 through 2023, the Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Program has awarded more than $17.7 million in funding to 81 projects to restore and manage dynamic forest blocks to enhance forest age and structural diversity, target outreach and assistance to key forest landowners and practitioners, sustain and improve habitat quality and connectivity within and between eastern brook trout population patches and restore eastern hellbender and freshwater mussel habitat. Grantees are providing more than $20 million in match for a total conservation impact of more than $37.7 million.Major funding for the Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Program is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, AstraZeneca and Cleveland Cliffs.

Description: HUC 12 watershed boundaries within the Central Appalachian Program area were attributed with information in order to provide project decision support at a scale that was deemed appropriate given the regional resolution of many of the datasets that were used in this analysis. HUC 12 watersheds were used to provide the capability to identify where there is high percent overlap with Golden-winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Wood Thrush and Eastern Brook Trout habitat, threats to habitats, as well as a number of other important factors to consider when determining the potential benefits of a conservation or restoration project. For a full list, see the Enriched HUC 12 Query attributes tab within this workbook. Users can use the website query tool to find HUC 12 watersheds within the program area that meet the specific conditions that are important to the user. HUC 12 watershed pdf reports can also be exported that detail the potential benefits of projects located with that HUC 12.

Description: The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is often referred to as an “edge” species, seeking habitat where crop fields intersect with woodlands, pastures and old fields. Historically, land use favored bobwhite, but changes in land use and how lands are managed have caused the bird’s numbers to dip by more than 80 percent over the last 60 years.Bobwhites depend on early successional habitat grasslands, shrubby areas, and pine or oak savannahs found across the East. These habitats have the forbs, legumes and insects that bobwhite need for food and the heavy or brushy cover for nesting, brooding and safety. To help reverse bobwhite declines, NRCS is working with private landowners in 14 states to manage for high-quality early successional habitat.

Description: The Resilient and Connected Network is a proposed portfolio of climate-resilient conservation sites designed to sustain biodiversity and ecological functions under a changing climate. TNC scientists—in collaboration with over 280 other scientists from agencies, academia and non-profit organizations across the U.S.—identified and mapped these sites over a 10-year period using public data available at state and national scales.The Network is a starting point for conversations with local communities, indigenous tribes, land trusts, agencies, corporations, and funders on how to coordinate conservation efforts to increase our collective impact and sustain nature. Resilient lands and waters may be conserved by a wide range of measures from good land stewardship, to other forms of private land conservation, to outright fee or easement acquisition by various levels of government.

Description: These are mussel streams and rivers updated in July 2024 and based on National Hydrography Dataset Plus High Resolution (NHDPlus HR) stream segments. Mussel attributes include StreamGroup and Description:Group 1: High Quality Streams (as listed by the WVDNR and having potential habitat for mussels) and state mussel streams. Description: Dam locations primarily from the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP). The objective of this inventory and tool is to build a community of practice among resource managers and enable them to identify high priority aquatic connectivity restoration projects. The prioritization tool allows users to explore and download barrier inventory information at different scales. The project tracks dams (including diversions, weirs, low head dams), assessed road stream crossings, and waterfalls. They do not track beaver dams or other non-structural barriers at this time. This inventory is compiled from multiple sources at multiple scales. The objective of this inventory is to highlight the efforts of states and local partners by compiling information and readily updating it from living sources of truth on a regular basis. Description: This dataset represents road stream crossings in the northeastern United States (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV, DC). This data was complied as part of the North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative (NAACC) for the 2016 version of the Northeast Aquatic Connectivity anlaysis (http://maps.freshwaternetwork.org/northeast). The road-stream crossing data in this dataset compiled by the NAACC (https://streamcontinuity.org/) and its contributors. Dam data was compiled for the original Northeast Aquatic Connectivity study (http://rcngrants.org/content/northeast-aquatic-connectivity) and revised based on input from the Northeast Aquatic Connectivity project workgroup, updates from state dam databases, and removals from American River's dam removal database (https://www.americanrivers.org/threats-solutions/restoring-damaged-rivers/dam-removal-map). Both road-stream crossings and dams were spatially linked to flowlines in the USGS National Hydrography Plus (NHD-Plus) v2 1:100,000 stream dataset. These barriers form the primary input dataset for the 2016 version of the Northeast Aquatic Connectvitiy analysis. (http://maps.freshwaternetwork.org/northeast). To this barrier dataset, 38 ecologically-relevant metrics were calculated and used in the barrier prioritization.

Description: This dataset provides information about the conditions of the nation’s surface waters. States, territories and authorized tribes (states for brevity) assess the quality of their surface waters and report it to EPA as part of their Integrated Report, which combines Clean Water Act Sections 303(d) and 305(b). This dataset provides the spatial locations of state-defined Assessment Units and Assessment decisions for those waters. Designated Use and assessed Parameter information have been rolled up into groups. This dataset also includes attributes indicating the Assessment Units that have one or more Actions (a.k.a., Plans, such as Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), Alternative Restoration Plans, Protection Plans, etc.) associated with the water. For more information, please see https://www.epa.gov/waterdata/attains.This dataset provides the latest information submitted to EPA for each state. States typically provide this data to EPA every two years, but the currency of the data may vary by state. The Control table indicates the latest data available for each state.
